Intu Afrika is home to three Kalahari lions. Currently there is an adult male and two adult females. The lions were sourced from Harnas Lion, Leopard and Cheetah Farm in the Gobabis district in eastern Namibia late in 2000. The female and one of the males are siblings and were born early in 2000. The older male was a nomad that came into Namibia from Botswana. He is estimated to have been born during mid-1999. The animals were held in captive conditions and fed pieces of meat on a daily basis. Subsequent to their arrival on Intu Afrika they were released into a 500 ha enclosure with the aim of rehabilitating them with eventual release onto the 10 000 ha reserve.

Research on their capacity to avoid heat stress and use of certain behaviors to do so is being performed on these lions by the Zoology department of the University of the Free State in South Africa. Fieldwork was performed during winter 2003 and summer 2004. The lions were darted and Thermocron buttons that measure surface temperature were implanted in the large male and the female at the neck, base of the tail and in the loins. This was required since lions, like all mammals, can regulate their core temperature in their bodies but surface temperature fluctuates.

* Head south on the B1 via Rehoboth and Kalkrand towards Mariental to the intersection with the C20 (approx. 239 km).
* Turn left onto the C20 and drive to the intersection with the D1268 (approx 12 km).
* Turn left onto the D1268 and drive to the entrance to Zebra Lodge (approx. 42 km)

Windhoek turning at Kalkrand
* Head south on the B1 via Rehoboth to Kalkrand and the intersection with the C21 (approx. 186 km).
* Turn left and follow the C21 to the intersection with the D1268 (approx 42 km).
* Turn right onto the D1268 and drive to the entrance to Zebra Lodge (approx. 22 km)

Keetmanshoop

* Drive north on the B1 to Mariental (approx. 220 km).
* Drive north from Mariental to the C20 intersection (approx. 11 km).
* Turn right onto the C20 and drive to the intersection with the D1268 (approx 12 km).
* Turn left onto the D1268 and drive to the entrance to Zebra Lodge (approx. 42 km).

Mariental
* Drive north from Mariental on the B1 to the C20 intersection (approx. 11 km).

Fish River Canyon from the C37
* Drive north-east on the C37 to the intersection with the C12 (distance depends on point of departure).

* Drive north on the B1 to Mariental (approx. 220 km).

Sesriem Entrance Gate via Maltahöhe
* Head south on the C27 to the intersection with the D845 (approx. 42 km)
* Turn left onto the D845 and drive to the intersection with the C19 (approx. 14 km)
* Turn right onto the C19 and drive via Maltahöhe (approx 128 km).
* Follow the C19 to Mariental (approx. 111 km).
* Drive north from Mariental to the C20 intersection (approx. 11 km).
* Turn right onto the C20 and drive to the intersection with the D1268 (approx 12 km).
* Turn left onto the D1268 and drive to the entrance to Zebra Lodge (approx. 42 km).

Gobabis
* Head south from Gobabis along the C20 to the T-Junction marked C20… yes, you read that right, it’s one of those funny Namibian roads (approx 216 km)
* Turn right onto the C20 and drive to the intersection with the D1268 (approx 113 km km).
* Turn right onto the D1268 and drive to the entrance to Zebra Lodge (approx. 42 km).
