Etosha history: a timeline for the park |
Between 1884 and 1885, a trader, purchased land from Namutoni
westwards to Okaukuejo from Chief Kambonde. He allowed 46 Dorsland
Trekker families to settle in an area between Grootfontein,
Otavi, Etosha Pan, Okaukuejo and Ombika. The Trekkers named
this land “Upingtonia” and intended to proclaim it as a republic. Find

Etosha history: Andersson, the explorer |
In 1849 two men met in London. They were Karl Johan Andersson, better
known as Charles John Andersson, and Francis Galton. Together they
planned to pioneer a route from the coast of Africa to Lake Ngami.
Andersson's name is memorialised by the Etosha gate closest to

Etosha history: Galton, the scientist |
Francis Galton is well known as the discoverer of the fingerprint. At the age of two, he was able to read. By five, he knew some Latin, Greek and long division. At the age of six he read adult books, including Shakespeare, and poetry, which he could quote. He was also one of the first Europeans to map and explore Namibia. Etosha history: Von Lindequist, the founder |
Friedrich von Lindequist, former German governor, left behind a dark
legacy in the aftermath of the Nama and Herero uprisings. On the other
hand, he shaped Namibia's future economy by playing a key role in the
introduction of Karakul sheep, and he proclaimed the Etosha National

Destination: Katima Mulilo, crocodiles and crafts |
The 542 kilometers of tar, between Rundu and Katima Mulilo, are a

History: Hendrick Witbooi, in the footsteps of war |
It is not possible to visit Namibia without coming across the face of Hendrik Witbooi on the Namibian Dollar. And every itinerary includes at least one story of the leader of the 1904 Nama Uprising. Witbooi fought against Namibians and Germans with equal ferocity for much of his life, but only shortly before his death did he commit to the ongoing fight against colonialism. Find out more, here>>
