To begin the process of restoring the land stock fencing and exotic species were removed, and the land was extended to adjoin the massive Namib Naukluft Park. As grazing pressure was removed, grass species composition and diversity recovered, and with it wild life began to return. The process of returning the Kulala Wilderness Reserve to it's natural state is ongoing. Small Carnivore Research Project With the rehabilitation efforts of the Kulala Wilderness Reserve the need arose to assess and monitor the rehabilitation of the area. In 2000 the 'Small Carnivore Research Project" was established to study indicator species. Focus species have been Bat-eared fox, aardwolf, Black-backed jackal, Cape fox and African wildcat. The project was later extended to include farmer education on the importance of small carnivores. * During the dry season, the lodge can be reached in a small 2 X 4 sedan. * Although Kulala Wilderness Camp lies in a desert, rain in other parts of the country can cause rivers to flow. The onset of the flow is very rapid. * As a large part of the journey takes place on gravel roads, consultants should switch to a 4x4 vehicle during the rainy season (October to April). * Solitaire * Walvis Bay * Swakopmund * Maltahöhe * Mariental * Duwisib Castle * Helmeringhausen * Lüderitz (very long day's drive) * Windhoek Swakopmund Swakopmund to Kulala Wilderness Camp is approx. 344 km * From Swakopmund take the B2 to Walvis Bay (approx. 30 km) * From Walvis Bay drive south on the C14 to Solitaire (approx. 230 km) * From Solitaire drive south on the C19 to Kulala Wilderness Camp (approx. 84 km) The B2 is tar road.
