Introduction

Damarland lies between Etosha National Park, Kaokoland and the Skeleton Coast Park. With its central location Khorixas is a natural re-fuelling stop for travellers travelling between the coast and Etosha and Kaokoland.

Although Khorixas itself is not a tourist destination the surrounding landscape is full of surprises. About 70 km to the east in the rugged, sparsely vegetated Ugab Terraces, travellers can see the distinctive sandstone monolith, the Ugab Vingerklip. The Petrified Forest, some 65 km west, is a site where ancient trees have turned to stone. South west of the Petrified Forest lies Twyfelfontein, with its rock art and the geological formations known as the Brutn Mountain and Organ Pipes. And the seasonal rivers crisscrossing Damaraland are the 'highways' of the desert elephants.
