There is a large amount of begging at the fuel station due to high levels of unemployment at the town. If travellers wish to make a difference, they should seek out the community Craft Centre, and make a donation there. If leaving the car, valuables should be left out of sight and the car should be locked.

The Crafts for Conservation Centre in the centre of Khorixas offers the local unemployed a means to earn an income from the estimated 40,000 tourists passing through this town annually. Established in 1972, Khorixas is one of Namibia’s newer towns. At the centre of Damaraland, it offers travellers the opportunity to refuel and purchase refreshments before travelling onwards to Twyfelfontein, Brandberg, Etosha and the coast.

The name ‘Khorixas’ comes from the word ‘Gorigas’, which in the local language Damara, means a water bush. The word is pronounced kaw-ree-chus. The 'ch' sound is pronounced as in the German, 'ach' or 'achtung'.

Under the Odendaal Plan, during the colonial apartheid era, a system of ‘homelands’ was created for various tribes. In 1972, construction began on a town called ‘Welwitschia’, which was to be the administrative centre for the Damara people and the capital of the region known as Damaraland. The town was renamed Khorixas, after the Gorigas bush. After independence and the re-working of the regions Khorixas became part of the Kunene region and the administrative funsctions moved from Khorixas to Opuwo.

Summer days are generally hot. The average temperature is 29 C, but the temperature can rise to above 40 C in summer. During winter, the daytime temperature rises to approximately 23 C. During winter nights temperatures can fall to below 0 C.
