The Atlantic Ocean of the Namibian coast line supports a great diversity and concentration of marine life. The Walvis Bay Lagoon is a Ramsar site and a wetland of international importance attracting Palaearctic and intra-African migratory species. Participants on the dolphin & seal cruise may see a variety of marine and bird life. * Marine Life
* Bird Life
Sandwich Harbour lies between the sand sea of the Namib Desert and
the Atlantic Ocean. The lagoon is separated from the sea by a bar of
sand. The northern end of the lagoon is edged by a bed of reeds and
watered by a freshwater aquifer from
beneath the dunes. This fresh water is what attracts the numerous bird
species and other mammals, and makes Sandwich Harbour a globally important wetland and interesting ecosystem. * Bird Life Sandwich Harbour is known to support up to 230,000 individual birds at times, but regularly supports over 50,000 birds in summer and over 20,000 birds in winter. Between 42 and 51 species of wetland bird can be found.
* Mammals A small amount of wildlife may be seen around the lagoon. This includes Black-backed jackal and, on rare occasions, Brown hyena. About 410 species of bony fish and 83 species of cartilaginous fish are thought to occur in Namibian coastal waters. What is caught depends on the location of the fish. The following is a rough guideline to popular species: * Beach Fishing: Kabeljou, Steenbras, Blacktail and Galjoen. A variety of sharks such as Coppershark (weighing up to 160kg), Spotted Gully Shark and Hound Shark. * Skiboat Fishing: Kabeljou, Steenbras, Blacktail, Barbel, Spotted Gullyshark and Houndshark. * Deep Sea Fishing: Snoek and Yellow Tail are caught approximately 40 – 60 km from shore. Skippers All Levo Tours skippers are qualified with an under 25 ton ticket, and undergo strict training to ensure all requirements are up to date. All skippers have a First Aid Certificate. Boats The custom-built fleet consists of catamaran shaped skiboats, 25 to 28 feet in length, to ensure stability in the water. Vessels have toilets on board, a shaded cabin area, and comfortable seating. All boats are surveyed annually and issued safety certificates. Seasickness is rare as the boats are very stable and as activities take place in the protected bay area. The dolphin and seal cruise only takes place in the mornings before the wind rises.
