The Atlantic Ocean of the Namibian coast line supports a great diversity and concentration of marine life. The Walvis Bay Lagoon is a Ramsar site and a wetland of international importance attracting Palaearctic and intra-African migratory species. Participants on the boat cruise may see a variety of marine and bird life. * Marine Life
* Bird Life
Sandwich Harbour lies between the sand sea of the Namib Desert and
the Atlantic Ocean. The lagoon is separated from the sea by a bar of
sand. The northern end of the lagoon is edged by a bed of reeds and
watered by a freshwater aquifer from
beneath the dunes. This fresh water is what attracts the numerous bird
species and other mammals and makes Sandwich Harbour a globally important wetland and interesting ecosystem. * Bird Life Sandwich Harbour is known to support at times up to 230 000 individual birds, but regularly supports over 50,000 birds in summer and over 20,000 birds in winter. Between 42 and 51 species of wetland bird are found.
* Mammals A small amount of wildlife may be seen around the lagoon. This includes Black-backed jackal and on rare occations Brown hyena. This morning excursion is very popular as a tourism excursion as well as for incentive / conference groups, as it shows an area that the average visitor doesn’t have access to. The entire cruise is done with ski boats in the protected lagoon area of Walvis Bay, where the water is calm and abundant with bird life. Boats depart from the Walvis Bay Yacht Club, cruise through the harbour to the Bird Island, then cut across the lagoon to moored Russian trawlers where seals swim up to the boats for something to eat. From there the boats head for Pelican Point where entertainment is provided by a large seal colony and schools of dolphins swimming alongside the boats. Dolphins sighted are the Heaviside and Bottlenose species. For the bird lovers, apart from seeing many flamingos, cormorants, and pelicans, there are common sightings of the White Chinned Petrel, Wilson’s Storm Petrel, Cape Gannet, Black Oystercatcher, and on rare occations even the African (Jackass) Penguin. Pelicans also provide wonderful photographic opportunities while flying alongside the boats. Fresh Walvis Bay oysters, snacks, cold sparkling wine, beer and soft drinks are served on board the boat. Where possible groups of 10 and more will be kept privatley on boats. Time duration: 09h00 – 12h30 This is basically the same as the Marine Cruise with the difference that at approximately 11h30 passengers are offloaded at an old wreck on a deserted beach where they are served a light, informal lunch. * This is not a sit-down meal although chairs are provided * There is a choice of 2 menus. * This option is usually aimed at groups / incentives with a minimum of 8 participants.
Time duration: 09h00 – 13h00 “Le Petit Pelican” is a shortened version of the Marine Cruise, with an earlier departure time and earlier return, as well as a high season option later in the morning. Clients who have limited time at the coast can still experience the cruise and have ample time to travel to a further destination on the same day. The itinerary covers the highlights of the full length cruise to view dolphins, seals, bird life, seal colony, oyster farms, harbour, as well as the seals climbing onto the boat for something to eat. Snacks, oysters, sparkling wine, and other drinks are served on the boat. before returning. In high season (July to December) a second departure, after the return of the first one has returned is offered. Time duration: 08h00 – 10h30 and in high season 10h30 – 13h00 After the highlights of the Marine Cruise in the morning clients disembark the boats at approximately 11h30, close to the lighthouse at Pelican Point. Here they are met by their guides in 4x4 vehicles, against the backdrop of the Namib Dunes. They travel from this point straight along the coast beside the dunes, onwards to the Sandwich Harbour area. A lunch is served either on the beach or atop the massive dunes overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, before returning to Walvis Bay in the late afternoon. Please note that if vehicles cannot drive all the way along the beach to get to Sandwich Harbour due to the tides, clients will have to walk 1 - 2 km to reach this area, or alternatively take other routes to view the area, such as driving to the view point. Where possible groups of 10 and more will be kept privatley on boats and / or vehicles. Time duration: 09h00 to approx. 16h30 Private Groups * Where possible groups of 10 and more will be kept privatley on boats and / or vehicles * All groups having the Marine cruise with beach lunch are automatically private on their boat and for lunch * Special private tours can be quoted for on request Incentives Mola Mola can cater for corporate and incentive groups of up to approx. 80 persons for both the Marine Cruise and Marine Dune Day, and offer various options depending on group size and budget. Local guide Fried offers a unique, accompanied self-drive tour of Walvis Bay and the township Kuisebmond, while illustrating the complex and interesting history of the various shops. Mola Mola’s marine cruises take place on the calm morning waters of the Walvis Bay lagoon, in stable catamaran hull motor launches. These cruises show travellers amazing sights – the dunes behind the waves, the thronging birds at Bird Island, Cape fur seals in the water and even an old shipwreck. Accompanied by a snack or lunch of fresh oysters, aboard the boat or on the beach, there are few Namibian experiences as unique as this. Hidden by a wall of dunes and the shifting shoreline of the Atlantic, few places are as hard to reach as Sandwich Harbour. The drive takes travellers over the dunes and along the shoreline of the Atlantic to a lagoon fed by a fresh water aquifer on the one side and filled by the waters of Atlantic on the other. In the contrasting environment of reed beds and shoreline, distinct bird species throng and thrive. |
