Introduction & planning tips
Although the Khaudum Game Park in the south-eastern part of the Kavango is a small park with an area of just 3,841 km², it is a legend among offroad explorers and adventurers. There are wild places in Africa, however few are as truly wild as Khaudum. The area is as close to 'untouched' as a place can be due to the extremely difficult driving conditions and very low number of visitors. This is the great attraction of the park, and the reason why its wildlife is so interesting.
Consultants' map ![]() The northern Khaudum falls in the malaria area. See basic Malaria precautions and guidelines Note to Consultants In some parts of the park, a short stretch of road can take several hours to drive. Consultants should promote the park in a responsible manner, bearing in mind that only the most skilled and experienced offroad drivers will be able to make it through the park. Consultants should also be aware that the wildlife can be either aggressive or very elusive. If there is any uncertainty, the traveller should be discouraged from driving the park and a day trip into the park should be booked with Tsumkwe Country Lodge or (rdln Nhoma Safari Camp}. Consultants should also make sure that the vehicle rental company allows vehicles into the Khaudum National Park as several companies do not. Consultant's folder Click on the title to show or hide the information. Two nights, with camping at Khaudum Camp and Sigaretti Camp. However bear in mind that if the traveller does get stuck, this may be extended to three or four nights, depending on when a car comes by to assist.
Other than two campsites, Khaudum Camp and Sigaretti Camp, there are no facilities within the Park. * NO petrol station * NO shops Note: Water and wood may be available at the 2 camps, but this is not guaranteed, and travellers should be entirely self-sufficient before entering the park. Itinerary The Khaudum Game Park can be driven from Tsumkwe to the Kavango, or the other way round. Camping and entrance fees There is no fee for camping at Sigaretti or Khaudum Camps, and campsites are on a first-come, first-serve basis. No reservations can be made. Entrance and vehicle fees can be paid at the Ministry of Environment and Tourism offices at Sigaretti Camp and Khaudum Camp. It is advisable to arrive at the camp at least 1 hour before sunset, to have time to set up camp before it gets dark. Driving Travellers should be prepared for difficult driving conditions. Please see the note on driving in the Khaudum Game Park. Malaria The northern section of Khaudum Game Park is in the malaria area. See basic Malaria precautions and guidelines Wildlife Wildlife is not used to humans and will either be extremely elusive or aggressive. Travellers should not leave the car at waterholes, except where there are game hides. Keep a safe distance from elephants. Ensure that there is enough room to move off if an elephant becomes aggressive. Warning: take extreme caution in the presence of elephants at watering holes. Do not tempt fate: keep vehicles within respectable distance. Travellers should be extra cautious during the dry season when animals compete for positions at shrinking waterholes. Travellers should be extremely cautious of wildlife moving through camps. All food and water must be stowed way at all times in camp and should only be taken out for cooking and drinking. Read the guidelines on Wildlife viewing Safety Supplies No food is sold within the park and water and firewood may not be available. Travellers should be entirely self sufficient with provisions for three days at least. Entry into the park is subject to rules established by the Ministry of
Environment and Tourism. The rules are designed to protect both the
traveller, other travellers and the wildlife and environment. Travellers
entering the park sign an entry permit with agreement to adhere to a
clearly stated set of rules, some of which are extracted and commented
upon below. Travellers should be advised to carefully read the rules on the
entry permit in their entirety. Contravention of the rules may result in
injury, damage to wildlife and the environment, a fine and / or being
ordered to leave the park. * The Park must be entered by at least two 4 X 4 offroad vehicles per party Comment: Due to the difficulty of the roads and no facilities such as petrol stations or vehicle repair in or near the park it is required to enter the park with two 4x4 vehicles to ensure that support in case of getting stuck or vehicle problems is at hand. * Minimum 100 liters of water per vehicle and 3 days of food per person Comment: As there are no supplies available in or near the park travellers are required to be self sufficent. Water may be available at the camps, but can not be guaranteed. It is important to bring plenty of water along for drinking and washing. It is safest to be completely self-sufficient. * Camping is only allowed at Sigaretti Camp and Khaudum Camp Comment: For the safety of the traveller, the wildlife and the environment, there is no camping allowed at any of the waterholes or anywhere else in the park, except the camps. * No collection of firewood is permitted within the park Comment: Firewood should be available at the camps, but is not guaranteed, and travellers are not allowed to collect firewood inside the park. Travelers must bring their own firewood. * Trailers should not be taken into the park Comment: The road conditions are extremely rugged and difficult, so towing a trailer, not specifically designed and built for Khaudum conditions and the specific vehicle towing it, may very likely result in damage to and breakdown of the vehicle. * No pets are allowed. Comment: this rule is primarily directed at Namibians, but also at anyone else traveling with pets. Pets may injure and / or kill wildlife, and they may bring diseases into the park. * The convoy system of a minimum of two 4X4 vehicles with high ground clearance must be used, so that if there is a problem, one vehicle can be used to get help. * Each vehicle should carry a minimum of 100 liters of water, food for 3 days, a minimum of 40 liters of extra diesel or 60 liters of extra petrol. Driving through sand consumes a large amount of fuel. This may increase depending on the amount of driving done in the park. * The roads in the park are mainly very deep sand, or mud during the rainy season, and it is very easy to get stuck. In areas where the rivers flow (omburambas), the sand is washed away during the rainy season and the roads become firmer. However in these areas, holes are dug by warthogs, so caution is advised and drivers must drive slowly. * Trailers should not be taken into the park. * Drivers should be able to perform basic repairs and have the tools to do so. A minimum of two spare tyres, a hi-lift jack, a square wood plank to place under the jack, a shovel, mats and spare fan belts must carried on each vehicle. A winch is a useful addition. * It is advisable to check the radiator and undercarriage for grass build-up as grass often gets stuck and can lead to the vehicle catching fire. A radiator mesh is useful. * If the traveller uses a rental vehicle, permission for use of the vehicle in the Khaudum must obtained from the rental company in advance. * Challenging offroad driving * Adventure * Truly wild environment * Wildlife such as elephants, lions and roan antelope. * The only park in Namibia were African wild dogs are found. Sightings are rare. * Vegetation in the Khaudum Game Park consists mainly of woodland savannah with extremely dense bush. The dense bush makes viewing of game vhallenging, and sightings are rare during the rainy season. * Trees such as Wild Syringa, False Mopane, Zambesi Teak, Transvaal Teak and Purple Terminalia are characteristic of the area. * The north of the park is characterised by the soft sand of the Kalahari basin, while the south is bedrock areas of quartzite alternated with shallow, sandy soils. The Khaudum is rich in wildlife, however due to the dense bush much of it is difficult to see. Hides have been placed at several waterholes to make game viewing easier and safer. * The more common mammal species include kudu, oryx, giraffe, and elephants. * The park is known for the Sable antelope, Roan antelope and the tsessebe. Sightings are rare. * It is also the only park in Namibia were African wild dogs are found. Sightings are rare. * Predators such as lions, leopards and spotted hyena are common. Lions, are often heard, not seen. Note: Wildlife is not used to humans and can either be extremely elusive or aggressive.
