On the long road between Johannesburg and Gauteng and Keetmanshoop, surrounded by the endless plains of southern Namibia, Karasburg is a welcome stop, a good place to refuel and an excellent choice to restock the coolbox.

Karasburg was originally known as Kalkfontein, 'the chalk fountain'. In 1939 its name was changed to Karasburg. In the Nama language, the word 'Kharas' means 'a plain covered in stones'.

The weather at Karasburg is extremely hot, and the high temperatures can lead to heat exhaustion. Temperatures in the vicinity have been known to rise above 40 C. Carry a bottle of water, and drink from it.
